Just to clarify- I love Yiddish Duolingo- it’s what gave me the confidence to feel I could actually learn Yiddish.
I finished the course a while ago- I have saved screen grabs of some of my favorite moments (originally shared on Twitter).

Duolingo helped me a ton. I also used “In Eynem,” but Duo kept me engaged every day, & motivated to keep going. I wouldn’t use it alone, but I’m grateful I had it.

I’m good at studying on my own, as long as I’m interested in the subject!

Do the Yivo classes focus on written Yiddish, or is speaking a part of it? I think that’s what I need a class for, at this point.

They have different ones with different focuses but they don’t all run each term…

For me, Yiddish is totally spoken, b/c my grandparents spoke it when I was a child, but I never saw it written

I’m the total opposite. My Yiddish-speaking grandparents didn’t pass it on, sadly. I originally learned it in order to read midrash & folktales!

I sampled Yiddish Duolingo and found the accent to be a mishmash and the sentences strange. I imagine the YIVO courses are better on both those fronts. Yiddish was מאמע לושן when I was growing up as my folks were Bundist survivors and recent immigrants to Canada.

I did Italian Duolingo for a couple of years and found it very helpful for comprehension and less so for conversation. I imagine that's similar for other languages.
