Since "AI" isn't actually intelligent (it's just statistical likelihoods of the next word), nor is it even artificial (it's manually trained and tuned with deliberate feedback from traumatized human moderators), it's best understood as a market bubble welded to an organizational/management pathology

I don't understand it. In late 80s and early 90s worked on automating manual systems. Humans had to tell the program correct information; tons of testing. Don't want to simplify but garbage in, garbage out.

Current LLM AI has no mechanism for understanding the content and context of any knowledge domain.

AI in some other domain specific applications can be useful - but those are highly specialized applications where the AI can be focused on a specific problem.

Just in terms of nomenclature, part of the problem is that when some think of "Artificial Intelligence" (e.g ChatGPT, Google Gemini), what they are really thinking is "Artificial Sentience" (e.g. Asimov's Robots, HAL9000) and don't think to differentiate between the two concepts.

Depends on how you frame "AI" as a concept. Years ago, I remember reading a book by Churchland(I think that was the author), and in it the author argued that AI may not be recognizable to us as intelligence when it does emerge. (It's a largely philosophical argument, of course) /1

But that rests on the reality that von Neumann architecture machines are intrinsically deterministic, and further that any analysis that may be done "independently" by the AI won't look much like human intelligence as a result. (Not to mention the inputs to the AI are way different)

I immediately understood it like being a parent. I can do the dishes myself, but to get the kid to do them I have to teach the child how to, which is more than double my workload. As a parent, it is my job to teach my child to do things and it's something I want to do, even if it's tiring sometimes.

It is at best, capable of picking up a dish and throwing it into the sink. So we have to fill the sink up, set the dishes next to the baby, and then pick up the dish out of the water, rinse and dry it and put it away. Not to mention the number of shattered dishes, and additional scrubbing needed.
