Councils are being given new powers to allow them to buy vacant and derelict land in compulsory purchases in order to build new homes.
Prices paid will be based on the current value, not the future 'hope value' that the land might have once it's built on, meaning councils can buy the land for less.

Did you know the government have already done something similar by giving powers to councils to auction off leases on commercial properties that have remained empty?
