Hahahaha I have saved on cosplay items but never on a functional piece of clothing. Same for woodworking, I cannot make a table for $10 like IKEA, but I can make a nice table for much more than that. Making for savings was the idea, but I never figured it out.
The way to save money is by restoring lost gems. My wife restored a free coffee table that retails for $4k and is working on a dresser that would cost $1500 if you could find it. Of course, neither will be sold.
I love a good fle market find but I lean into mid century and that's rare to find in the markets near me so I will scratch build and brother walnut is expensive, exotics even more so. Did turn a 30 chest of drawers into my perfect tv cabinet tho, still chasing that one
I majored in costume design before cosplay really caught on in the US and it’s very cool to see so many more people take joy in the hobby. There’s a reason Broadway costumes are all created in big shops- making costumes requires a big up front investment most people can’t afford.
I can imagine the cosplay community building a similar thing to the shared resources and skills of the costume shop, but to create for themselves instead of for profit.
There are group workshops in the city, but I would rather not do daily to some distant workshop. But I make due with what I have. Cosplay is the only place where I have eaked out a savings over buying
