My daughter takes her daughters regularly! They come back home with many books and take turns whose book gets read at bedtime!!! I'm a very fortunate grandma!!! My library love was audio books during my long work commutes...made the drive tolerable!!!

I practically did when a 9v transistor radio was what teachers had to take away from us. The world is a huge library now and our actual libraries have stunning stuff. Our main library even has a A/V studio with a green screen.

Libraries are amazing! Being able to check things out digitally would have been revolutionary to kid me. I spent most of my allowance money on late fines because we lived so far from the library that I’d check out 30 books at a time and they’d all be late by the time I could get back.

I used to spend tons of time at my local library when I was growing up. My mom and I went together when I was young -- she was a voracious reader -- and when I got old enough I went alone. I would sometimes go after school and do my homework there. It was a nice quiet place to spend time in.

I'm older, but started hiking down to the local public library when I was 12. Books on every possible subject. Magazines. Even large tape decks with headphones so I could sit and listen to Aretha Franklin. I mean, what else could a kid in the 60s and 70s ask for?

Agreed! The DC MLK library has an entire makers level with laser cutters, 3D printers, recording studio, sewing machines, and cricut equipment all of which is free to use for anyone with a DC library card. They also have free classes to learn how to use the equipment.

Plenty of people use recording studios at libraries for recording interviews, memory kits, podcasts, etc. If anyone wants to jam in the booth, more power to them! They might even be able to check out the instruments too!

In some localities in the US, you can obtain library cards to multiple counties via reciprocity. I have library cards for 3 systems because they all participate in reciprocity. Research your local library system to see if you can do that!

Just went into my library the other day to ask if they would use my slide projector I was ditching. They said someone was in the library right now who wanted to borrow one but they could not locate theirs, so sure! I dropped it off and a bunch of slide carousels, too. Amazing!

Bsky doesn't have an algo! It's all based on people sharing the post and any instances the post has in feeds by using the tag system. I LOVED the library as kid as well! I loved to just sit in there for awhile just to be there. Ours was pretty small and quaint.

To be fair, there *are* algorithms if you CHOOSE to use feeds that have them. You're totally right that there's no single, all-encompassing algorithm though, and a lot of us just use the following feed to see what people we care to hear from are posting and sharing, or other less complex feeds.

Our library gives free seeds, and lends bakeware, and has a cultural pass where you can go to museums and things for free. They lend mobile hotspots/tablets for 6 months at a time so you can have free internet. And the Hoopla and Kanopy apps are like free streaming with a library card.

Yup. Our library in a town of under 25k people has an awesome "maker space" for literally anyone to use. It includes 2 different 3d printers, many computers with great maker-type programs, as well as community programs that get people with similar interests together. They even have a cooking club!

When I used to go to the library as a kid, the manga section was pretty small. Like maybe 3 volumes of Fruits Basket, DBZ, and the first volume of Buddha. Now the manga section has many titles, there's studio spaces, video games and even a 3D printer.
Yeah, I would've wanted to live there as a kid.
