There is never a shortage of people who appeal to "human nature" to justify their prejudices. The truth of course is that we're very complex and flexible animals.
Another good counter-example is the management of common land in England, much of which was appropriated during the enclosure movement:

I really found the ecological view on economics useful but need to read well beyond Hardin because he clearly had indulged in motivated reasoning on basis of his bigoted assumptions.
I was 12 when Hardin’s essay was published in Science. My parents were AAAS members (as I have been for most of my life) and they shared the Hardin letter to Science with their children. I have not followed Hardin beyond briefly reading about his Zero Population Growth Theory and his death.
Hardin died in 2003 and I was 13 years into the practice of law. I am a plaintiff’s employment discrimination attorney and I have a long held interest in the biases that people have. I will look into Hardin in the next few weeks. Thank you for your article.
Ostroms solution to TTOTC is applicable to resources that are easily observed and measured, and who overexploitation is no subject to extensive time delays.
The Tragedy of the Commons was never more than an unevidenced piece of polemic. It wormed its way into public converse because it *sounded* good, not because it was true.
