The world did not end when the bridge was closed for two years between 2015 & 17.
Twenty-four thousand pedestrians and cyclists use it daily; those numbers will only increase if motor vehicles are excluded.
Bonus: the bridge will need a lot less maintenance!

Agree with @tobywells.bsky.social that current layout is a poor use of space:
