another layer to this mess is that for my generation, Dirk was basketball. Period. Luka became an extension of that — not just because he was a Euro the Mavs traded for on draft day, but the one-season crossover, embracing the city, on-court talent, etc.

Superstars — prime Deron Willimans, DeAndre Jordan, Dwight Howard, etc. — repeatedly told Dallas "no." Luka said, "yes." And yet he's gone.
You don't have to hold on to "fan favorites" (Barea, Boban, Tyson, etc.). But you do have to hold on to your fabric. They just don't get it.
