Exiles are also allowed to take a unit of empire knights hired in. I use my block of Voland’s Venators for them.

Controversial opinion (or is it?) - 8th ed remains the best edition IMO. And there's a decent fan army book for Dogs of War in 8th.

I liked 8th, the bits I didn't could be picked and chosen like storm of magic and massive units, spinning bow tie terrain rules, blah. At its core it played like Warhammer and was pretty slick.

Interestingly, the terrain rules were forced on us to a degree. We (as in, the design team) mitigated them as best we could by segregating them from the main rules so they could be read as optional. I didn't entirely dislike them, but they really slowed the game down.

Yeah I guessed as much from reading interviews and whatnot. I've never minded terrain having a passive effect but as you say, slowed everything down. Had more of a place in a dungeon explorer or adventure game than the main - it's a big battle, focus on that - game

or you could try using them with a ruleset called Hobgoblin, in that you can pretty much use any fantasy army you can dream up 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Proxy them in as empire! I’m kinda past caring about having the “right” models for the current edition. For old world dwarfs they made thunderers and quarrelers quite bad. So all those models are now my rangers unit instead. I might use a wood elf dragon as a gyrobomber. I don’t care anymore 😆
