When I was an academic, I talked about systemic racism in the late ‘80s. The lectures enraged my UW-Madison students. I thought it was racist pushback against a “new” idea. I had no clue that I and many others (like my mentor Nellie Y. McKay) were touching the carotid of U.S. culture.
