Ok, I did some reading on a wicking garden. I was in Horticulture for 50 years and still practice. This type of watering is just 'bottom watering'
It is impossible to substitute for the advantages of deep soil.
A wicking garden defeats that. (More)

It is impossible to substitute for the advantages of deep soil. Unless you have sandy / rocky soil, or big water-hogging trees nearby, a wicking garden will not help. Deep mulch will prevent surface loss of water, and improve your soil at the same time.

I have straight rock and water hogging trees nearby. It's also very windy😅 i do deep mulch but the moisture blows out the side of the beds. I add more compost every year but with no topsoil to start with, it will be decades before I could do true deep soil gardening 😔
