Emilia Perez getting so many Oscar nominations is perfectly reflective of our time — the voices of actual trans people are being drowned out by the roaring applause of cis people congratulating themselves for performative support.

It's also just a TERRIBLE movie. Likely BECAUSE of what you're stating. When I laugh THAT many times in a movie where it is clearly not what was intended, I know it was a problem from the start. Embarrassingly bad to the point where good performances just make it feel even worse.
The whole film feels like someone fed the words "trans", "musical", "drugs", and "lifeless" into an AI. The AI spit out a movie and that movie was translated poorly by someone into another language and then fed back into the AI with the directive to make the songs less memorable.
Stoked for Karla Sofía Gascón’s historic nomination on principle, wish she didn’t insult the intelligence of trans writers who critiqued her film on the way there!!!
Hi BJ. Thank you as always for your work. Is there a specific writer or two that you recommend who has written about Emilia Perez? I avoided the film based on the reviews and initial online reaction, but feel I need to at least see it to fully understand the discourse. Thank you.
Just read your (and Chris's) article on Slashfilm of the best picture nomination rankings and appreciate all the additional links as well. (In these terrible times, just trying to show my appreciation for good and important work!)
In a year, btw, that had banger after banger of trans films by trans directors. Even inside of the awards system, the awards are going to cis directors over trans artists
When we talk about our lives, we’re mistaken. When we talk about our bodies, we’re misguided. When we create art, we’re ignored. Cis people imagine our lives and tell other cis people, and they’re applauded
i have never seen this film and never plan to after everything i’ve heard, but i can guarantee it did not deserve all those nominations. awards shows are dog shit
it's wild and weird, but every song is really bad, the lyrics and dialogs are absolutely insane (like written by an ESL student for a school play), and the performances had such terrible spanish they rendered most scenes basically unwatchable

it wild and weird and doing the most
but I had a good time, moved even at some parts
incredibly sloppy effort
I really liked the movie
kind of a lot
It's all performative for people that didn't emotionally mature past 11th grade.
