As a (mainly) academic editor, I haven't decided which side of this fence I'm going to land on. I don't use genAI in my work, but haven't decided whether to refuse AI generated docs or add a new, higher priced service to account for the extra fact checking and rework needed.

Good point about needing to account for extra fact checking when quoting a price, because AI is rife with delusion. This is one example where using AI could significantly increase costs to authors. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hmmm. If two people need money and one borrows some while the other robs the bank, they both get money, but doesn’t how they do it matter? I think AI has pros and cons, but where the ethical line stands in its use is hazy. Thanks for answering, Doug.

Using other people’s work without permission to feed through an algorithm to make more writing is a new form of plagiarism imo. Also AI art is inherently empty as there’s no mind or experience on the other kind trying to create or communicate

With AI art I am more accepting, probably than I should be, because it’s darn hard to get AI to produce what you’re trying to create, and a lot of work does go into creating images from words. It’s a craft in itself, but, I agree with you it’s stolen artists’ style, and that’s not cool.

True, and that’s a very good question. Perhaps it’s because I’m fascinated by visuals and that AI art spits out amazing images I can’t create. But, that doesn’t make AI art ethically any different from AI writing. If anything, it makes me greedy and lazy, which I justify by my handicap. ☹️
