This map by @undertheraedar is a fun way of showing the old and young regions. Modal age simply describes the most common age in a region. Under 25 regions are due to universities I would argue...

I thought that but actually I think it's more those are all places with nothing to hold the under-25s? No significant higher education opportunities, limited good, non-seasonal, well-paid work...

Bit of both in many cases, plus falling birth rates for decades

Young move away and are replaced by old, repeat with fewer young, property prices continue rising, etc

Except for Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews! (Maybe Aberdeen too, but apparently Scotland doesn't extend much further north than Dundee.)

I was once asked by a mutual friend from London if I would be "popping round for tea" to our friend in The Lakes. I live in Nairn (Inverness way). 😐 But you're near to Glasgow, aren't you? And Carlisle isn't much further? Serious lack of geographical knowledge.

I was chatting to another friend the other night who couldn't comprehend that Ness was 600 miles from London. He thought the entire UK was only 300 miles long... I replied, thats England. Scotland is another 300 and if you include the islands, significantly more!

Ahhh, my old childhood haunts! I grew up in this cottage. We had friends up the hill in Regoul and we spent a lot of time at the ponds (before it was a trout farm). Happy times.
