I have just discovered the work of George Shiras (1859-1942). Born in Pennsylvania, he studied law & then moved into politics. In the 1870s, he became fascinated with the wildlife on the Michigan side of Lake Superior. For 70 years he photographed this part of the world (1)

After a term in Congress from 1903 to 1905, Shiras put an end to his political career and devoted himself fulltime to the study of wildlife and to photography. Theodore Roosevelt became a fan and then a friend. (2)
His work was published in a 2-volume autobiography ‘Hunting Wild Life With Camera and Flashlight’ (1935). (4)
