I’ve been struggling recently on whether to include my disability in my voice of advocacy, concerned that it would overshadow or even deform the pungency of the message.

This episode made it very clear that, no, it wouldn’t, it will instead amplify it and give it roots.

I tend not to speak publically about it; but why not share now? My eye condition is called Incomplete Achromatopsia. It requires both parents to have a recessive gene, so it skips generations. My grandfather had it as well.

The condition’s primary feature is that it prevents my brain from interpreting a majority of the signals from my cones, what gives most people day vision, color vision, and detail vision.

This means that I have elevated light sensitivity, profound color vision, and both near and far sightedness.

If that weren’t enough, it also usually comes with a diagnosis of nystigmus and myopia, both of which I got dealt as well in both eyes.

For being a somewhat uncommon eye condition (1 in 30k-90k people have it), it’s got a surprising amount of documentation and study surrounding it because it is so profound.
