Ah! Someone else who's seen Gay Purree! I just recommend it on this chain thinking no one else would. I should have scrolled further lol. Excellent movie, beautiful art, great voice actors.
The Last Unicorn -- though I fear it might have been a bit rough in the aging process. I thought it was fairly timeless but a few people have said otherwise.
Uh
Um
The Breadwinner
Utena the movie (the adolescence of Utena)
Kikiβs delivery service
the Great Mouse detective
Tezukaβs Metropolis
Wolf Walkers
Summer Wars
One of my faves I'm guessing no one will mention is Gay Purree. Singing cats on a Paris adventure, mail order brides, greedy boudoir owners, and wonderful voice actors. It's really unique and beautifully illustrated.
You know the scene in the diner, with Kuzco and Yzma walking in and out of the kitchen? We watched that scene with no subtitles and the sound off, and then the kids got to write their own dialogue, trying to figure out what was going on.
They came up with comedy gold
Last unicorn mentioned
I remember watching it with siblings when I was a toddler, it's sooo good! Had me on the edge the whole time
Im so happy someone else remembers this π
Because no one has suggested it yet. An American Tale Fival Goes West. It was the first western movie my dad ever showed me. Also a good stand alone movie I actually did not see the first American Tale movie until decades later.
Oh there's so many fantastic recs in here, gonna steal some ideas π Personal faves are:
1. Your Name; and
2. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
- both sooo beautiful but also made me cry with just. Big Emotions TM π₯Ήπ
I love all the Barbie movies up to 27. My favorite tbh is probably "Barbie in a mermaid's tale" 1&2 because I love mermaids but one of the absolute best is "Barbie Princess and the Pauper". It's also always impressive to watch Nutcracker and SwanLake due to the ballet movementsπ€
If you're in for a bit of a ride, my favourite is The Brave Little Toaster! It's an 80s move so prepare for some funky and dark theming. But it has gorgeous animation and musical numbers that still stick with me today!
Atlantis : The Lost Empire, Interstella 5555, Ponyo, Prince of Dreams, all the Scooby-Doo movies like the Ghost Witch or Zombie Island... Oh, and Robots.
And maybe more, but I'm not sure if they are not series so... π§
Treasure Planet, The Cat Returns, and Origin: Spirits of the Past. The last one is underrated in my opinion, the opening song branded itself in my mind it was SO good
Promare! It's pastelcolored shonen with a blaring hint of BL π studio trigger went all out with the animations where it's almost silly at times but that just adds to the fun imo. Enemys to Friends/Lovers and the cute princelike character being a strong badass is sooo good!
Hmmm thereβs so many good ones, so many favesβ¦ for oldies Iβd say Anastasia and Prince of Egypt, for newer ones Spiderman Into The Spiderverse and Puss in Boots The Last Wish. If youβre feeling festive/wintery Iβd rec Rise of the Guardians or Klaus π
I really love "Maquia when the promised flower blooms". Loss, immortality, motherhood, I suck at summaries but it's really beautiful (but it hurts dskjgdf)
The Iron Giant is my personal favorite. Watched it so many times as a kid. However, if you want an an anime-style movie, Wolf Children is one of my favorites as well.
Rise of the Guardians, Mune, the book of life, Epic, the cat returns, Prince of
Egypt , a whisker away, your name, sinbad legend of the seven seas, the wild robot, the bad guys, wolf children, to the forest of firefly lights.
It's sooo good! In fact, the scene at the end with Basil laughing maniacally as they trigger the trap early might have been unconscious inspiration for my current radio apple WIP.
I will keep thinking of animated movies you might not have seen!
The Road to El Dorado is easily one of my favorites. I also love Coco but I've only seen it in Spanish so I don't know what it's like in English. I love Charlotte's Web and Rikki Tikki Tavi too.
Klaus, even though it's a holiday movie it's still so so good, and the Mitchells vs the Machines! Also, White Fang is really good if you want something more serious in tone but has such a satisfying ending
If you can find it βThe Flight of Dragonsβ. Animated by the same studio that worked on βThe Last Unicornβ.
Itβs a little cheesy but I have loved it ever since I was little and it aired as a tv special in the 80βs. It inspired a lot of my fascination with dragons and storytelling.
One I don't think is very known is The Sea Prince and the Fire Child. It's Romeo and Juliet mixed with fairies. The visuals are beautiful and the art in the end credits especially so.
i really like barbie in the nutcracker. since it's the first in the barbie cgi's movie line, it's a bit different from the rest of them (story/character-wise)
Comments
you need to watch it
Another fun musical animated film (also about cats) that might not be as well known is Gay Purr-ee. It had Judy Garland as the leading role.
James Earl Jones eating the villain role decades before Scar!
Ghost in the shell (1 and 2)
The last unicorn
Um
The Breadwinner
Utena the movie (the adolescence of Utena)
Kikiβs delivery service
the Great Mouse detective
Tezukaβs Metropolis
Wolf Walkers
Summer Wars
Sorry ππ

Second is Rapunzel if you want something not Christmas related!
I remember watching it with siblings when I was a toddler, it's sooo good! Had me on the edge the whole time

Several of my other favourites have already been suggested (Brisby, All dogs go to heaven, Road to El dorado, the lion king, the prince of Egyptβ¦.)
Mune (very cute and pretty, nice creature designs)
Robot Dreams (relatively recent, 2D animated, 0 spoken dialogue)
Flow (haven't actually seen this one myself yet but desperately want to!)
1. Your Name; and
2. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
- both sooo beautiful but also made me cry with just. Big Emotions TM π₯Ήπ
This is an OLD movie but itβs something different. βΊοΈ A lot of Art Nouveau style.
I love it so much laskjdflkh
Or older ones like 'El Dorado' and 'Kings new groove'
Oh, and 'the sea beast' (I rarely see people talk about it, but it was really nice in my opinion)
The Wild Robot, Balto, Rock and Rule
Or for 2D, Kiki's Delivery Service or Felidae (though be warned Felidae is pretty gruesome and not at all cozy lmao)
And maybe more, but I'm not sure if they are not series so... π§
The Secret of NIMH
You wonβt regret it
Your Name
Please watch Your Name
I really like Song of the Sea and Belle
Ponyo
Or
Dofus livre 1: Julith
Itβs available on internet archive for free :D
Egypt , a whisker away, your name, sinbad legend of the seven seas, the wild robot, the bad guys, wolf children, to the forest of firefly lights.
Those are just a few βΊοΈ
For something more obscure... Basil the Great Mouse Detective, maybe?
I will keep thinking of animated movies you might not have seen!
I love them them both especially anything by studio Saloon π
