Firstly, under the rules in 2023, Essendon would have been unable to match any bid on Kako if he was taken before pick 40. If they wanted him, they would have had to hope that he was available at their first round pick (which ended up being pick 9).
This meant that there was no pressing need for the Bombers to stockpile picks to match a bid for Kako.
Over season 2024, Kako continued to thrive and remained a prospect on the cusp of the top 10 in the draft.
