Rosa played the draft game perfectly.
Secured the type of players we need - and plenty of them. Got our two academy kids in. Doubled our draft hand for rounds 1&2 next year. Secured Jaxon Prior for no cost and has keep a spot open for Baldwin if he can get through the preseason.

Could we have held onto the pick and landed Kako? Could we have had a pick before a kako bid? Plausibly. Given we still landed the player we wanted as well as an extra first and second round pick in the process (in addition to another 3 players in a very deep draft) it’s hard to say it was wrong.

To understand the reasons why Essendon made the moves it did, you have to go back a year to the trade period of 2023. You also have to understand the rules that Essendon was operating under in that period.

Firstly, under the rules in 2023, Essendon would have been unable to match any bid on Kako if he was taken before pick 40. If they wanted him, they would have had to hope that he was available at their first round pick (which ended up being pick 9).

Kako was already pretty highly rated at this time - @jasperchellappah.bsky.social had him in the mix for the top 10 in his Nov 23 article whilst RookieMeCentral had him in the top 24.

This meant that there was no pressing need for the Bombers to stockpile picks to match a bid for Kako.

Therefore, the Bombers used their future draft capital to secure trade needs in 2023. This meant they ended the 2023 draft and trade period with picks 9 and 31.

Over season 2024, Kako continued to thrive and remained a prospect on the cusp of the top 10 in the draft.

Everything changed in August of 2024. The AFL revised the rules so that all clubs could match bids on NGA players. Given Essendon's dire need for a quality small forward, this was perfect to guarantee that they could address a clear list need with Kako.

This created a problem though

Firstly, Essendon finished season 2024 in 11th spot. giving them pick 8 in the draft. After the Saints received compensation for Battle, this moved out to pick 9, right around the point where Kako might be taken.

I can see that side of it, but I couldn’t disagree more. Maximised our hands in a ‘deep’ draft (not an ‘amazing top end’ draft) while strengthening next year. Couldn’t have got better value for picks in my mind.

Terrific analysis Ian. There is no doubt it was a no-brainer. It is extremely poor and ill-informed commentary by Barrett, obviously fed by the lamentable view of Mick Ablett, who proved himself to be shockingly ignorant of how the draft works.
