I can’t believe they just let me buy trees, as if I am somehow responsible enough to own something that will get thirty feet tall. That’s like a very slow kaiju!

I feel as if you're preparing us for the possibility that your trees will run wild and lay waste to civilization, while simultaneously disclaiming responsibility if they do, and I'm not sure that's allowable.
At the very least, you should be required to take out ent-insurance. Entsurance? Whatever.
Right?! I wish it was SLIGHTLY easier though. I found a plum I wanted at the store yesterday but there wasn't a second variety there to polinate it with, and it requires a cross.
For the love of fruit, have compatible varieties on hand ;_;
My old man friend whose goats I manicure asked me if I wanted a plant and I didn’t catch what kind so now I have *some* type of pine tree. Sir, I don’t own a couch, what am I supposed to do with a tree?!?!?
My Dad planted a sequoia in the backyard once. When I pointed out the inevitable disaster if it grew he said, "Well I'll be dead once it's big enough to be a problem." Thanks Dad.
I think this gives real insight into the old saying: “A man has made at least a start on discovering the meaning of human life when he plants shade trees under which he knows full well he will never sit.”
can you please explain this to the sycamore at the end of our garden which is determined to gift us hundreds of new trees each spring? we are not responsible enough for that!
It’s a terrible year for big leaf maple seedlings here. Think of all the little helicopters on the ground - and each one wants to become a tree. Any tiny amount of dirt will do. Sometimes more than one per square inch! In every flowerpot. Between deck boards. On the coir doormat!
Ah, there is hidden wisdom from emberlight and vae...
1. People will sell a non self fertile tree so you have to buy a more expensive tree later
2. People will sell a profligate tree whose self sown seedlings are to share the love/hell (delete as appropriate)
Having lived surrounded by woodland for over a third of a century, and worked in commercial forestry, I've developed somewhat nuanced feelings towards trees. From extreme fondness, bordering on awe for some (especially birch, beech and oak), through tolerance for others: to absolute hatred for some.
But she is in the interior west, now. That is big for a tree out here. Mostly.
Also, city.
The zombie elm half in my front yard did its best to take out my neighbor's house losing a limb the winter before last. And Ulmus pumila are only about that big.
We got this free swamp oak from our local Subaru dealer. I feel like I know how to care for the car my than this tree but she's got tons of friends here.
I can only assume that it's a full grown olive tree and the vast majority of that $150k is safely extracting it alive, transport and planting it at its new home.
The birds love the zombie elm that leans over my front garden. They all come there to drop the seeds of whatever they have been eating in my part shade garden. Junipers, cotoneasters, and chokecherries...
Local garden centres here sell tiny baby monkey puzzle trees. I keep debating if I should drop a note through the door of a house near me explaining why the landmark one on a main road in our town had to come down. It was eating the house. From beneath you it devours. For extensive grounds only.
I feel the same way about ordering hatching eggs on the internet. I can order as many small dinosaurs as I want. I can order more than I can reasonably keep. It's so easy.
They let me take mine home from the hospital and the only test was to make sure the tiny baby could breathe in the car seat! I felt horribly like I should have had at least a short multiple choice test!
The thought that kept running through my head when I took my first home from the hospital was "This can't be legal, no one in my family should be trusted with a baby!"
MOOD! I mean, I at least had raised orphan kittens, so in some sense I was *kind of* prepared, but... It's like, you're trusting with this? Yes, I know I made it, but you're trusting me with this?? THIS IS A TINY HUMAN BEAN!

I'm planning 2 or 3 more trees.

Makes me wanna go to Tractor Supply and that's nearly as risky as letting my wallet into a craft store >.>
I actually have a wishlist researched on the Arbor Foundation site 😅
I'm more nervous about keeping them alive than I was about my first kid. 🙄

1. They hope you grow to be a 'slow kaiju wrangler'
2. They assume your descendants have a flamethrower and chainsaw

to let a young redwood
grow next to a house.
Even in this
one lifetime,
you will have to choose.
That great calm being,
this clutter of soup pots and books—
Already the first branch-tips brush at the window.
Softly, calmly, immensity taps at your life.

Dangerous things, trees.
Looking at seeds now.
There are so many trees planted way too close to foundations around here or directly over the house’s sewer connections.
The birds love the zombie elm that leans over my front garden. They all come there to drop the seeds of whatever they have been eating in my part shade garden. Junipers, cotoneasters, and chokecherries...
So, so, so many chokecherry bush seedlings.
(Nodding)
Ents are kaiju!
Go bigger.
Imagine planting a tree 35 years ago that produces an image of 5 dirty faces on it.?
The first face I saw was Jesus, I thought.....ill send a photo since you love treesb...
