Those all flopped, but I think part of the definition of "flopped harder" is the amount of money spent on them. The billions thrown at Horizon Worlds / Metaverse dwarfs all those together. But Microsoft's attempt to "become the Internet" for Windows users in the 1990s might come close.

There's a few VR apps that address this (The Canadian-made Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes is a prime example) and they're tons of fun at a party, but you've nailed the issue: strapping something over your eyes and ears makes it real hard to interact with other humans.
