Basically, that there are passive-aggressive cultures and aggressive-aggressive cultures. "Canadian nice" is like "Midwestern nice" in that half the time, it's code for "I want to murder your entire family in front of you, then kill you slowly and painfully last."

My mother's family are New York Jews with everything that comes with that (Westchester, not the City as much, but still)
My Dad's family are Midwest Jews, with all the Midwestern affectations

Basically, the difference between your teenager giving monosyllabic responses about visiting family v. gushing about grandma.
"I know Canadians would recognize and respect such an approach." is ice cold.
It's *much* more visible in person or in vocal deliveries.
Passive-aggression like this means you want them dead.
