I’m struggling to accept this as truth. How can you test this without either a computer capable of expressing it as an integer or floating point number at least as long - possibly at least half as long. (Trying to recall an early ForTran exercise from a loooong time ago.)
It's about maths researcher at Cambridge looking into prime number patterns. He's being watched by the NSA and discovers others in this line of research were killed.
For anyone looking for it, it’s called Prime Target and stars Leo Woodall with a pg14 rating and qualifies as “thriller” which I would not expect from a math show. 😂
Large prime numbers are useful for implementing mathematical operations that support so-called asymmetric encryption, which is crucial for efficient encrypted communication between computers. The whole of the world wide web uses this nowadays (hence the switch from http to https).
Interesting, I was always thinking it's just crunching the same advanced algorithm and just waiting for the computing to take place . Thus greater results would come from faster computers rather than novel searching methods !
Considering the time it'd take to utter the entirety of the number, we'd probably be well into the heat death of the universe by that point - so not a great loss.

Do I know why: no
Do I know how: also no
Do I hope it works in the current political climate: oh God yes
Multiply two enormous prime numbers together - that gives you an encryption key.
To break the key, you need to factor it back into the two enormous primes.
No computer can do that in less time than the age of the universe.
SECURITY!
Apparently not. Live long and π-rosper.
