The fact that there is no way to set this by default (or, truthfully, that the default is to push unreliable AI summaries ahead of genuine search results) is still a travesty, and a breach of confidence with the user. But this update represents a clear improvement.
I propose the better use of AI behind the scenes would be to parse content from the bulk of natural search results, and post not "summaries" but straight, relevant excerpts from those that pass some "the info here seems most consistent with comparable pages" filter. But I think I'd still prefer -AI.
Such a useful trick. Listened to https://dianecoyle1859.bsky.social talk about the power consumption of these totally not useful searches so delighted to be able to avoid them.
