We lived in Hollywood, Fl in the late 1990s. While at the beach,a small boat was followed by the Coast Guard. People jumped out of the boat to swim to shore. Some swam out to help them. ICE was waiting on shore. Turned out they were Haitian. Lucky they survived.

And almost all of them are here perfectly legally. If they ask for asylum - whether are not they come through a port of entry- our own laws since 1968 have said they *must* be allowed to stay until their cases are adjudicated. It is our own government that has been breaking our own treaties.

When I lived in Ft Myers FL I had many friends who escaped Belize and were considered illegal immigrants. They fled for their lives because they were gay. Nicest people ever.

What a lot of people don't know is that our immigration system is completely broken. It has been so for decades. If you have money and connections, you can get here "legally." But regular folk fleeing for their lives, they are the ones who need it most but are abused by the system.

This reminds me of the young polish woman my friend and her husband, who was a former DOJ attorney and U.S. territory AG, hired to be their nanny. Not even weeks later she magically had U.S. citizenship. My friend's mom said, "Oh, her attorney filed the wrong paperwork." 🤔

Same. 'Undocumented' will do. We don't use the only other appropriate words or phrase I can think of - asylum seeker, refugee - because it would indict our government, which has systematically destroyed central and south American countries' democracies for fascist corporations for centuries.

In fact, if they applied for asylum they are not undocumented either. Since due to a shortage of judges it can take many years for a case to be decided they are not eligible to be deported for years. They get hired despite not having work permits, pay taxes, cannot get medicaid or SNAP.
