Personal statements have become less important in selection process for most universities and may only be used in borderline cases. Grade predictions are still king, and that impacts less privileged students as was seen during Covid when grade inflation was highest in private schools.

The personal statement allowed my son to explain why he wasn't able to sit his A-levels. His cancer treatments were the reason, but fortunately the University had the foresight and understanding. He graduated and went on to gain a Master's degree. Now giving back working in the NHS.

Yes. He showed a lot of grit and determination. The TYA unit at Clatterbridge were truly wonderful. We could never thank them enough, from the Consultants through to the cleaners. A team effort without comparison.

My kids went to school in Brussels with a lot of UK kids.

My second-hand impression was that the careers teachers had a big input into the writing of those statements. The Irish CAO points system seemed a lot fairer to me.

There's a difference between advising or helping and more or less writing the statement for the pupils
