I got two bids to put solar on my new farmhouse. Neither had any cost or fee breakout. No panel, inverter prices, or racking prices, no labor, permitting, or engineering costs. How can an industry this mature still be playing hide the ball? And, who enforces the practice? #energysky #greensky

And does anyone have an opinion whether I should switch to geothermal before adding solar to have a better idea of the house's electricity use? The rural utility said I have to stay under 110% of use.
I've read that Australia is killing it with solar. Much to be admired. I'm trying the NREL PVWatts Calculator, which may be a reasonable proxy for sunspot, but my staggering ignorance prevents me from actually knowing.

At the end of the day, the way to pick a good contractor is to review the quote/payback assumptions they give you and evaluate how accurate it is.
Reviewing market reports from NREL (while they're still around) is the best option here if what you care about is a fair price.
