This is why the teaching of reading is so complex. Of course students need explicit instruction in phonics, PA, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. And of course students need time to practice all of those skills on their own and develop a love of reading.

Studies included in our review showed poor quality/did not meet quality criteria. Hence, there is still insufficient rigorous evidence out there on the role of independent reading for reading outcomes. 1/n

Until we have such evidence, we cannot indicate with certainty to what degree such procedures work/don't work. When we have more rigorous research in place, we will be able to say with certainty what works and under what conditions.
