bluesky is so nice cuz i opened this thread expecting to find a dozen "um ackshually" and "but but but what if i only use it for x" comments... and instead i found nothing but support/agreement
Picrew is genuinely the best and I have spent an embarrassing amount of time combing through them all looking for one to suit an OC i have in mind. an artist put their love into a picrew and I will be eternally grateful to them for my inspo
the makowka picrew is one of my favorites. along with that toon me is really good full body picrew, and there’s a plus size variant of it with the same options just on a larger body
Like iv been playing sens like elementary and games loke crossover (now pulse) were my character outlets back the and still are when I randomly things of a sonic oc
I will never understand going so far to use ai when there are so many character creation resources from picrew to the sims. Genuinely I use the sims 4 (modded) and picrew so much for character stuff and have always been happy with the results. Ai should never be an option, period.
Picrews are great. I've also never understood why people don't just... use a character creator from a game they play? I'd rather they not use AI or steal/edit my art, so it always boggled me why someone wouldn't just make an OC in one of the thousands of games with CC screens and go 'here they are'
Everyone starts somewhere, so it’s refreshing to see people refrain from using AI regarding character creation.
The ideas are there, but developing them into something presentable takes time. Knowing what you shouldn’t do when creating a character is an early sign of artistic integrity.
I will never, ever use AI. Picrews, doll dress up games, hero forge, reroll, etc. and as a Pathfinder GM I ban AI when I run games. Not in token art of monsters, not in players' character art, nothing. AI slop has made getting inspo neigh impossible, I can't imagine what it's like for artists 😭
We had a heartbreaking moment in our Pathfinder campaign where we realized two beloved goblin NPCs' art was AI. It slipped past us! The girls are banished to the theater of the mind for now.
(We've learned the secret to finding real art is to add "commission" to one's searches. X3)
I always use picrew to create my OCs and when I find an artist that I like the style and think would fit a specific OC, if I can afford it, I ask for a commission and send those as reference
AI proliferation has had a unique side effect on me, where any time I see a home grown, poorly constructed, possibly cringe meme-- I can't help but feel joy that someone took time to make it.
Mood. Tbh I wanna make a picrew so I can more easily make dnd npcs cuz i want them all to still be in my art style. The life of a dm is truly a second job. 😔
DollDivine, Meiker, and similar sites are fantastic! Not only can you make your ocs, you can make your own dress-up games as well! Meiker especially makes it so easy. I’ll never stop advocating for these wonderful sites and the people who keep them alive <3
I use picrews even though I can draw them - I work so slowly and have so little energy that sometimes I just need the guy in my brain to be real with minimal effort. The dress-up game aspect is so much fun too!!
Sometimes I even make em for existing ones, as if they'd made it for themselves
With the amount and styles of picrews out there I really don't understand why you wouldn't! Hell, go find a free dressup game even. Download a free game character creator! Options are virtually endless!!!
Oh? Why did it never occur to me that I could use picrew to make OCs? Thanks, Gracu - I too don't want to use AI for that, it feels like cheating (especially if the results are as bad as my attempts thus far just for giggles have been).

I could have a base for my characters as reference to keep working on writing only and then when I feel confident for drawing again use it as base.
I uses roblox rp games to make mine

I was too haughty and arrogant and now we live here
But thank you. I don't think I'm needing one of them fancy thingys.
Sometimes I even make em for existing ones, as if they'd made it for themselves
Plus then I get to determine exactly how it looks and actually feel as if I created something.
I love you, people who use picrews.
i love it sm, it helped me put together so many of my OCs and it's always fun to look for new pretty artstyles 🥰
