If they want the game to be something fans will watch, it has to be the only game on New Year's Eve. Like you said, 4 other games in competition when you have a team that under performs is recipe for terrible ratings!
It's the league's "flagship" game (along with another dozen the same day.)
I keep thinking how in the world could the NHL shoot itself in the foot again and there they go...
