China's state capitalism economy is integrated in a way that no Western sphere country could ever be. China has 2 parties, the CCP and the Military that control key industries directly as well as regulate private corps. I'm sure the Canadian gov't knows very well. Still, a better trading partner?

We are entering a world where we are going to have to manage relationships with untrustworthy powers -- China included. That said, I could be convinced of a tariff that accurately reflects the huge R&D subsidies Chinese companies are receiving, aimed at creating a competitive market.

We do have a pretty strong parts supply network, including global majors like Magna and Liminar. That's a huge part of the Ontario industry. If we end up undoing nearly 60 years of US market integration, we either need to reorient that elsewhere or lose it.

Agreed. Not long ago the rationale was tipped far over to "supporting the American position" as an ally. We're at, if not past the mid-way mark of completely severing that strategy to "doing whatever we want".

Canadian auto industry suppliers are quite involved with the US big three, less so with Chinese ones. That’s something to consider, though I'm not saying it outweighs the potential benefits of cheaper EV imports

If you're looking for something like this, a duty remission works much better (avoids needing to write good contracts), where exports are deducted from the import duties. We did it for Japan in the 60s. That being said, I think it's a permanent solution to a temporary problem tbh.

Setting up new factories in Ontario? I'm not sure how cheap those EVs would be. But it would mean getting more of the supply chain into Canada, which is also desirable.

I’ve been thinking about this and not really sure why moving away from US ties mean we should be justified in strengthening ties with China. China is still extremely hostile to our democratic values and the recent execution of an unspecified # of cdn citizens by their state should be a reminder.

To me this seems like betting China poses less of a national security risk or that they will be a more stable longterm partner (than the US). It wasn’t that long ago we had a serious diplomatic crisis and our trade relationship was threatened.
