Hmm.. I wonder if a much more sustainable policy would be to do it, but only for trucks (think transport trucks). We can exempt buses and such.

I don't think Toronto can toll them - they uploaded the Gardiner and DVP to the province in Dec 2023.
(as always, happy to be proven wrong)

Last year, I needed to drive from Waterloo to east Toronto via Mississauga. Normally a 90-ish minute trip (without traffic) it ended up being over three hours. The only part that didn't suck was the 15 minutes I cruised down the 407. Pricing makes it nicer for people who choose to drive, too!

The clearest demonstration of tolls is comparing ridership of GO Transit's bus services on Highway 407 vs 401. Hwy 407 has vastly more bus ridership despite having less nearby development, because it is way faster and more reliable.

These ideas are hard to communicate w/o sounding technical and academic. Your blog post does a wonderful job explaining in clear language, but our political leaders will need to craft messaging even more direct and simple if they want to sell congestion pricing.
