It can be hard to tell, but I do think this one is an oak. See this earlier photo I took of the same tree in June, where the leaves can be seen a little clearer:
That is not a cottonwood. Most trees shouldn't be identified by one characteristic. Seeing how this tree appears to be covered in moss the bark isn't a very good indicator
All the pictures I've seen so far point to it being an oak. The best way to tell would be looking at the apical/terminal bud on a branch. All Fagaceae species have terminal buds in clusters of 3
Oh man thats gonna make great firewood. I want a forest full of these. Splitting it....looks like it will be tough. Like 1 tree would last me 10 years.
