The Social Security Administration's information architecture is badly antiquated after decades of underfunding neglect from Congress

DOGE has no oversight, and seemingly no expertise in the relevant systems (e.g. SSA still employs COBOL), there's risk of "an accident" fucking up payments. 🧵

It seems possible that to justify their lies of widespread Social Security fraud, DOGE will stop payments to some subset of beneficiaries (based on d/o/b or some other characteristic that DOGE doesn't understand)

And it's possible they could deliberately stop payments to a wider group 🧵

We have so little visibility into the situation that I'm not comfortable even hazarding a guess as to the probabilities of any of those threats; those just seem to me, at 2AM on Tuesday, 2/18, to be the potential disruptions to payments

I can think of a dozen different legal organizations that would very quickly file suit (much better litigators than I). And I'd expect a few judges, perhaps more, would issue nationwide orders for the resumption of payments. 🧵

I worked full time while attending college and post college since 1990. I am afraid that they will lose the decades of monies I paid into SS and won’t reflect what I earned. That is my money and my privacy and in fact will be my health records Elon musk and his doge I’ll have accessed.

My mom depends on SSI. She’s worked her entire life near the poverty line and managed to raise two kids all on her own. She paid taxes. Never cheated on them. Never had any deductions or things like that other than my sister and I. If Elon takes away her SSI he should increase his security.
