Also I don’t know about Australia but in the US the Catholic kids of that generation went to Catholic schools, I’m sure Latin was encouraged if not required
no, I went to parochial school, never learned any Latin and even when it mass was in Latin none of the congregation understood it. i was little when it changed but my older sister didn't understand any of it. at my RC HS no one took Latin. it isn't a bad subject on its own though
I remember: "In nomine Patris et fillii et Spiritus Sancti" but not much beyond that from church, I have learned a lot of Latin via the sheer volume of Latin phrases in law (I'm not a lawyer but I taught legal English to law students abroad, so picked up a lot that way)
i'm sure you are familiar
just from police procedurals on TV, like Habeas Corpus or Nolo Contendere and having a good Latin base helps you learn a lot of foreign languages like Spanish or even German.
I went to an all girls Catholic school. Latin was compulsory for the first 3 years of high school (11-13).
All I can remember is how to say "the dog is in the garden"* and how to call someone a pest & a scoundrel**
I'm lapsed but still got mad when they got rid of the sign of peace from Covid on. It was the best bit! That and our octogenarian priest falling asleep in the middle of sermons and everyone just waiting patiently for him to wake up again
Yeah. Not sure about that. Live in heavily Catholic country and the only ones I know who have mastered Latin are academics. Don't know many priests, who likely would have had to know.
I had to go weekly until I started college and then around grandparents. My parents and brother stopped going weekly when I did which seemed just unfair. He’s very religious but in a different church now
We learned to sing the Mass in Latin and understand the Latin meaning beginning in the third grade. I took 3 years of Latin in High School. The Catholic schools in my town still use Latin from time to time.

Also cyan=blue but I only worked that out from printer cartridges and cyanotic feet.
