Amazingly enough, the Bible was written by humans with totally human purposes in mind. Those purposes were NOT for YOUR benefit any more than the purposes behind the Talmud, the Koran, the Book of Mormon, etc.
My personal understanding of Philemon is that Paul wanted the eponymous Philemon to manumit Onesimus, an escaped slave, but I would agree that Paul didn't go far enough.
as an atheist the answer is three of these, actually (attitudes and understanding about sex and consent have changed dramatically since the bible was written)
just because religious people donβt talk about it doesnβt mean itβs not in the bible. but the entire book of exodus is about slavery bad
Lobster. Explaining why the "Pilgrims", after landing at Plymouth Rock, did not eat lobster at the first Thanksgiving despite lobsters being so plentiful and the natives eating them.
Penguins, kangaroos weren't mentioned in the bible. Are these (Corrupted / fake "christians", religious fanatical lunatic cultists) going freak out & start killing them off?
Leviticus is written for the Jews of the Second Temple era, it is not obligatory for Christians. Paul explained this in Galatians.
Granted, the Christian Bible is still not necessarily something that should be looked at uncritically, but Christians can enjoy Red Lobster guilt-free.
Leaving shellfish and religion out of it, you get 50 to 100 people together there's going to be someone in there that's violent and stupid is a value judgment.
Addendum: The Talmud is not the source of the Jewish prohibition on shellfish, though it is the origin of the law against mixing meat and dairy in the same dish.
To paraphrase Dan McClellan: While I appreciate this posts rhetorical goals, to say that the Bible has a problem with any of these things, presupposes biblical univocality. More accurately various authors within the Bible supported these things except lobster.
You misunderstood. I agree with your meme. I literally said that books in the Bible support slavery, genocide, rape, but not lobster. I was just being pedantic about the concept that "The Bible" has any actual inherent meaning or unified message.
I agree with the caveat that the Bible is roughly similar to other forms of media with multiple authors in that there are overarching consistent themes that can be gleaned from the Bible. Granted, though, these themes are debated hotly and the Hebrew Bible and New Testament have two different goals.
The Hebrew Bible (or Tanakh) is two things: a series of stories meant to explain the origins of Israel and the covenant with God, and the laws that God asked the people of Israel to follow.
Christians usually use this as a set of parables to draw ideas from, as well as an origin for their faith.
The New Testament is a series of letters explaining Jesus' teachings. In ancient times, the Way (Jesus) was an alternative to the Law (Jewish tradition) that was meant to help gentiles gain the favor of God.
The New Testament has many authors, but all of them want to follow and develop the Way.
When in reality, anyone with half a brain can easily tell this was a very early form of health safety standards⦠shellfish are notorious for causing sickness, and without the knowledge on how to safely prepare them, people were just told to avoid.
Exactly. Which is why people who claim the Bible is a defense for things like social safety standards, health guidelines, etc. fall into the bad category I referenced lol.
It was also, thall shal not murder. Murder being unlawful killing. Killing was still perfectly fine if did the "right" way. Which did change from time to time, but god even commanded the killing of many.
Yeah I know, a religious person would argue that God and God alone can decide that and does decide that on a minute by minute basis, but im not religious so I'll just say this. In 42 years not 1 religious person has ever tried to push religion on me, hundreds of atheists have tried to push atheism
Then you aren't paying attention or lying if you said no Christian has ever tried pushing it on you. Our laws literally push it on you. And what is pushing atheism? Them telling you they don't believe in a god? So they try to force you not to believe in a god? Atheism is simply not believe in a god
What laws is it you disagree with that were born out of Christianity?
And yeah I'd say arrogantly and aggressively telling me God doesn't exist is pushing atheism on me, im not saying you are, im saying hundreds of times atheists have basically called me an idiot for not agreeing with them
You need to remember that Christians are the oppressors. The oppressed absolutely have the right to call out the oppressors and the system they use. So if you're in the system you will be attacked for supporting it, and rightfully
Because I could see the meme was an inaccurate dig at religion, and a lot of dumb folk believe that the lobster was the answer, and I believe that unchecked mistake leads to the growing arrogance of atheism, and I believe with no religion we'll all kill each other within a few generations .

All the other stuff is A-OK tho. π

They didnβt have sewage treatment plants in the old days and raw sewage went right into the waterways.

(*Notoriously important teachings from the new testament. Jesus was all about hate and judgement, right?)
Leviticus 11:9-12
Deuteronomy 22:29

You need to relearn how to talk to people. Therapist is recommended.
People will use the Bible to justify all sorts of evil, but it often fails to hold up to the actual language within the book.
