BREAKING: The mass firing of upwards of 1,800 workers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, including top climate scientists and weather forecasters, has begun.

The firings reportedly include workers at the National Weather Service.

That’s the problem: weather apps will continue to work tomorrow and the next day and the next. Forecasts are direct from computer models that will continue to be run (at least in the short term). The first place impacts shows up will be in severe weather warnings, or lack thereof.

Old enough that I remember there was an entire genre of jokes about how bad weather reporting was. But certainly for the last 15 years I have never known my iPhone to be wrong. The advancement in science and technology in that field over my lifetime is freaking amazing. this is vandalism.

I’m the director of NMF, the largest music festival in Oklahoma, home of the National Weather Center. The scientists being fired today saved lives at our festival last year during a historic tornado outbreak. The incredible humans in that building create ALL the models used by apps and tv stations.
