It's possible you may hear me get recast in a particular game that is very popular. If I am, it was not because I stepped away from the character willingly. :) It's because the employer refused to flip to an interim.

SAG-AFTRA are striking interactive projects to basically ask for protections of their voice work from AI, refusing to work with any game companies that won't sign an interim agreement until such time as the strike ends. Not complying may not mean they intend to use AI but it means they could.

It's being suggested that it may be because a decent amount of their cast are non-union and/or not voice actors but from my understanding it'd only require a bit of extra paper work to make sure no one has to be recast. Unfortunately only Supergiant can say for sure why they're refusing.

Iirc, doesn't the interim agreement require all VAs not apart of SAG-AFTRA be replaced by union VAs? If so, I understand why they wouldn't agree to the interim as most of the voice actors are in-house. Still, such a shitty situation.

Nope! The only thing that changes with signing an Interim is that any folks in the cast who are NU get a Taft-Hartley form—it's a page long and lets NU folks work U.

Being Tafted is what makes people eligible to join SAG-AFTRA!

(They won't send you a must-join letter until you're Tafted 2x.)

Sure! It's basically:

"Hey, we'd like to hire you onto [thing on a U contract]. Are you SAG-Eligible?"
"Nope!"
"Okay!"

They'll send you a form that looks a lot like this, just for whatever type of media you're working on. You fill it out, give it back, they send it to SAG-AFTRA, and you're set!

You can check your eligibility on the union's website after you're Tafted the first time (though it can be odd; my T-H was filled out with my correct name—and the site knew it—but my eligibility was only visible when searching up my legal one).

The process is functionally identical the second time!

The fact that there are folks who'd classify themselves as "non-actors" in the cast won't complicate things *unless* they want it to—if some devs in the voice cast don't want to be T-H'd, Supergiant would just need to reach out to the Interactive dept and ask for an exemption (game-specific waiver).

Not necessarily; the mechanics are complex + won't fit in 300 characters, but two major exceptions:

- Folks living in RTW states (US) or internationally have more wiggle room/don't hit must-join as normal.

- A project could petition for an exemption (waiver) that'd allow for mixed NU/U hiring.

Ok so there might be workarounds but it still seems like there are a whole lot more implications to it that "just have some people sign a paper and you’re good to go".
I get how important the union fight is, but I feel like minimizing how complex the implications of the interim can be is unfair.

How does a SAG interm like this work with a game like Hades where a 3rd of the VA cast are your two music composers and your writer, who are not professional VAs and wouldn't be part of a VA union. I assume that would be a complication.
