What I find very perplexing is why Civil Servants are not drawing Westminster Politicians attention to rules of Code of Conduct and the legal Audit requirements?
Even a Parish Council is audited up to the hilt and the Parish Councillors are called to account.

We have this myth that this country isn't corrupt. Because we don't have to pay bribes to get things done. But the corruption is when people move seamlessly from government to industry, or the kind of nepotism where family members get good jobs at clients. It distorts the fabric of the country

I worked in local govt for 30 years and there was zero tolerance for conflicts of interests, lobbying, receiving gifts or hospitality etc. for officers and Councillors. It has always amazed me how this is deemed acceptable in central govt 🤔

Work for a Financial Institution and you have to report the smallest of conflicts of interest. If my cousin worked on a supply contract its reportable! UKGov is sloppy on all conduct issues making it open to bribery & corruption.

I don’t believe it will ever change. We need to throw the whole lot of them out, both houses, and start again. Parliament is no longer fit for purpose. It has become a career choice which in itself is a conflict of interests. They are there to serve themselves not us. Keep the job, get the pension.

It never makes sense that I as an employee in the NHS with zero influence has stricter rules on behaviour, conflict of interest and corruption than MPs and Cabinet members. BTW I’m in favour of these rules for all public sector staff, it should include politicians and officials

I understand that it might be challenging for anyone to avoid having conflicts of interest entirely. However, the key point is that such conflicts should be disclosed, & individuals should abstain from participating in any vote that would directly benefit themselves, their family, or close friends.

Conflicts is not necessarily all Black or all White; some may also be very indirect or be almost trivial. Additionally, those with some conflicts may be the most informed about that subject to be debated. It is much more about how the conflict is made transparent and managed

100% agree, not everything is black and white. But an MP in this example should abstain from voting on a bill/contract that would put hundreds of millions of tax payers money either in his own pocket or a direct family members.

The only conflict of interest that entertains me is one involving Russia. Just like our grandparents stood up to tyranny I'm proud we as a country have promised to never abandon Ukraine.
