Maybe give Democrats a break for trying to get elected in a country filled with cruel people. Some years ago, Kamala Harris stood up for medical care for trans prisoners & the TV ad showing that helped put Trump back in the White House.

In college I studied conditions in Civil War POW camps and Northern prisons. My key takeaway is that even well meaning prison guards are often corrupted, because it's hard to retain your conviction that your captives are fully human and easy to slip into demonizing them.

The same happens to the rest of society. To justify the inhumane treatment of people we let ourselves think of anyone incarcerated as - "the worst of the worst," "violent animals," and "unrepentant monsters" - and make light of extrajudicial punishments, including sexual violence.

We do this subconsciously to resolve the tension created by the existence of these modern dungeons and consciously because we are really and in many cases justifiably furious at and terrified of some people in our society who commit heinous crimes.

I can’t tell you how much of public defense is spent advocating for the basic medical needs of incarcerated clients. It is a constant issue, it interferes with the legal defense work, and the vast majority of efforts lead nowhere. Cruelty is baked into our system.

As long as we're on the subject. Medical care for incarcerated people, including children, is contracted out to companies who hire people people who aren't generally qualified to do much anyway. If there's a medical emergency they'll ignore it for as long as they think they can get away with.
