>Awful journalism

>Use of slur
>Attempt to project the racism onto Japan
Incredible. British game journalism of the 90s is such a rancid mark on the industry, a shame the names of the "writers" are never on page
The casual use of a slur here, mixed with the weird criticism of Japanese society at the end as some sort of evidence for why role playing games are bad, and people wonder why some developers hate the use of the term JRPG
Everything is blending genres these days anyway...not to mention how often people just ignore when they're outright told what genre or style something is ( calling Metroid Prime an FPS when its 1st person adventure or Zelda an RPG when it's action adventure for examples... )
I had a friend who argued long ago that Zelda was an RPG and I asked how that worked and they said "you play the role of Link" so I responded that Madden is an RPG because you play the "role" of a football player
I used a similar comparison recently, saying "well Tony Hawk must be an RPG because you play the role of your chosen skater, and Vice City is an RPG because you play the role of Tommy Vercetti" 😅
Link can't even increase stats (barring The Adventures of Link.) Sure, he increases HP and Magic (and more recently Stamina) but most of his powering up comes from new items, and bosses are mostly big animal-like creatures
In this Ted talk, I will demonstrate how Zelda is a "Monster Hunter"-like...
Yeah, although in the case of Metroid Prime, I call it an FPS because I think the term Metroidvania is a mistake that humanity will still one day be punished for. Ok obviously, I'm being overdramatic, but this trend of naming entire genres after a single or a couple of games is so stupid
Funny thing is, Nintendo's official term for Metroid's gameplay style is search action. Metroidvania as a term was only really a fan term until the more recent boom in that style of game...and it was always weird to me too since not all Castlevania games are that type
I wish it would just stop. Like NO, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "SOULSLIKE" IT'S AN ACTION RPG JUST LIKE ALL OTHER ACTION RPGS! This shit doesn't get to have special treatment just because it's harder than most other games in that same genre!
Looks like he went on to have a career at Sony Europe. Which is disappointing. Though Google Gemini credits his work to the other Christian Slater, which is hilarious
You used to get a reputation for being a spicy game reviewer, 'The Vede' from PC gamer is scarred into my memory as someone who would intentionally say a few dumb things to get a rise out of people
I'll never miss the era of game reviewers going, "I don't understand it therefore it's bad."
For example, I love Yahtzee and think he's an amazing reviewer 99% of the time. But his Sonic reviews, regardless of the games actual quality, devolve into that mindset. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18SbeaoMLJM&t=133s
I got a brain aneurysm, just from their description of random encounters. Clearly dropped the game after an 1 hr, if your going seriously say Xenogears lacks orignal ideas lol.
this might be the most infuriating shit I've had to endure since the old X-Play reviews and whatever was up the ass of the industry when the original NieR released
I've noticed a trend where every UK magazine hated nearly every PS1 game. Guess it needed to be on an expensive home computer that only displayed 4 colors for them to consider it great.

This person makes the game sound so very run-of-the-mill, when it REALLY isn't. It was so revolutionary, probably more than FFVII was.
