I hadn't thought of the two different interpretations there: that the *world* thought were indispensable, versus who thought *themself* to be indispensable.
I forget if that's one of the quotes that was mentioned in a discussion I had with a fellow Wikipedian about quotes attributed to Winston Churchill and Charles De Gauille that they might not have said.
That reminds me of an old boss. It’s hard to imagine that they don’t see the inexorable march of time. My guess, they just have no other interests. Whenever I talk to a friends about retirement, I remind them that they better have a hobby they enjoy. Entertainment is, ultimately, boring.
