I have a superhero spec that's gotten raves. But the 4 leads are women, & 3 are women of color. I was told no one would ever go see it. By the time they were proven wrong, no one else wanted to enter the superhero biz against Marvel & WB.

YES! All I'm thinking about as I navigate pre-sales for my film. Sinners is (yet another) game changer we'll beg them not to ignore. These dudes still exist, and have greenlight power over most independent film (as well as some studio fare, still, too). They are deaf to stats that prove them wrong.

I remember there being controversy over the movie "Hitch", and that being the reason they paired Will Smith with Eva Mendes. They said a Black woman lead would make it look "too ethnic" and a white woman would turn off potential moviegoers. It's ridiculous.

Well, there is a point to be made there. If a movie is perceived as "a Black movie," white folks WON'T go see it. And Black auds don't always turn out for the movies geared toward them, even tho' studios think "they should" b/c "Look! Black people!" It's a vicious cycle the industry itself creates.

P.S. By the same token, most of my male friends do NOT watch TV series w/female leads, unless it's an actioner or thriller. They don't purposefully avoid them, they're just NOT on their radar.

I don’t go to theatres anymore, because COVID and I’m 50, yada yada.

But all the movies I’ve seen in theatres in the last 5 years have all been non-white casts.

It does matter.

I don't think this has ever been an issue here in Ireland personally. A "black movie" was always just a movie. Stuff like New Jack City, Passenger 57, Menace II Society, Juice, Boyz in Hood, Blade, etc were all extremely popular in my school.
