Brilliant wordsmith, insightful observer of human dynamics. McBride One of the greatest living writers.

One of the greatest books ever! I got hooked on James McBride reading DEACON KING KONG. As good as that was, GROCERY STORE is even better.

The best part was how he created the life he'd wished for his grandmother, but that she never had in reality. The power of words...

It is a wonderful book, historical fiction, part family drama, part mystery. He writes great characters. I’ve loved James McBride’s last two books. The one before The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store was Deacon King Kong.
