I think an underestimated skill I learned later in my art career is how to idea properly; I think I was focused on 'making' when I was younger that I didn't realize how important ruminating and conceptualizing was when creating something.

By studying, collecting art, making mood boards hours before getting into it (and getting practice, throwaway ideas out) did it cement this was a routine, much needed part of the process.
Part of conceptualizing properly does come from experience- It's one of those things that's invisible when studying art we enjoy. What was going on in their brain? What did drawing this feel like?
