What if Digital Foundry's tools and technologies existed in the 90s? What would a PlayStation vs Saturn face-off look like? That's the idea behind John's latest DF Retro project, with the first episode releasing today: https://youtu.be/8iGA8CM8X98

I love this era, the bit between the end of the 16-bit consoles and the PS1 Supremacy. No-one knew what what was going to work, so you had bonkers architectures (Jag, SAT), business methods (3DO), and the swansong of the home micros creating some fascinating specimens.
Visually, I think the Saturn games have aged much better than the PSX games. I currently have my SEGA Saturn hooked up to a 27" CRT but my PSX is boxed up in the basement.
Man I don't think I'll EVER get used to those huge vertical PS1 boxes, haha! This is a fantastic video, I love the idea of this series. The little snippet of Croc from the older video has me particularly excited for future episodes!
Awesome video :), @dark1x.bsky.social the transparency can be forgiven a bit on Saturn for those who mostly used composite in NA ;) but that can't make up for the frame rate! Can't wait for the next video!
I was cleaning my basement a few months ago when I found my NeGcon in a box of old gaming peripherals. I wish more games took advantage of it back in the day.
I haven't watched the video yet and definitely will - but while the NeGcon is amazing, the Saturn Arcade Racer is *pretty strong* even if it's not quite as great. Takes up like 5x the space though...
The technical limitations of the 5th gen consoles, coupled with the very diverse ways each console maker approached their hardware design in terms of CPU/GPU architectures, memory handling, and storage mediums, encouraged software developers to take more creative approaches and innovate

Also, the competitive race for creating cutting-edge arcade hardware, gave rise to arguably the golden years of gaming hardware. Consoles weren't just budget PCs with slightly modified off-the-shelf GPUs, and arcade boards were at least a whole generation ahead of anything available at home
