There's a tremendous racial divide in the trans and queer community around using Signal, the encrypted messaging app. If you're a trans or queer person of color, I highly recommend you get signal and start using it to organize with community.

I got the impression from this Reuters article, I’ve also seen people on the signal Reddit say signal payloads aren’t unencrypted in the notifs but I got spooked and didn’t want to risk it lol
here is a talk from a friend on the topic. This is MacOS but the logic is similar. Notification centre cache is covered at 15:50: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx71g6bRins
while theoretically possible, Signal protocol is open source and widely used.
If you're downloading the app from a reputable source it should be fine, but hey, maybe Google will cooperate and crack the binary on the Google Play store...
Exact quote.

Yes I can read. I see the words reputable and Google in that run-on sentence. Lighten up Bae or go back to Twitter.
Trying to push it. I've been purposefully trying to organize more with trans people of color and the lack of signal usage has been a barrier. Most don't know what it is. Not surprising ss the tech crowd that adopted it early is more homogenously white.
It might be helpful to add this to your original post in explanation. And then also try asking that segment of the community if there are any other reservations they have about it.
Signal is the way @meredithmeredith.bsky.social can explain precisely why. It is safe, deliberate in it's technological decisions, and truly implements best security practices. Thank you for using your trusted voice to tell this.

Hopefully it’s ok if I have just the “new message!” push notifications on that don’t actually show the message text
It would be possible to recover message content even if app was removed or message disappeared
Not sure if this is still the case, but I personally turn them off too.
