But carrier aviation is one of the hardest jobs imaginable. If people knew how often these birds ended up in the drink, they wouldn’t be this smug about it. It’s the cost of doing business and has been for decades.

Exact total will be difficult to pin down for any ship at any time, because it’s largely sensitive info. The DoD isn’t eager to broadcast total air fleet strengths to adversary nations.
