Yup. Back in '98 "a computer on every desktop" was going to elevate humanity and I felt really good about scoring a gig on Microsoft's Encarta encyclopedia. Two decades later I left MS after a reorg left me with the shame of working on a FOX heavy media feed indifferent to passing disinfo.

It did build communities though too many were communities of white (Christian) nationalists, misogynists, and anti-science conspiracy theorists.

Excellent article. I remember how one of the early promises of the internet was the ability to "make your own newspaper", none of us realizing that it would lead to the destruction of the legitimacy of the mass media and everyone being dangerously isolated in their own little information silos.

It's seemingly impossible these days to overcome the stubbornly entrenched sentiment that "It can't happen here." So thank you for what you're doing to counter this notion and bring greater awareness of the threats to a pluralistic, secular democracy that we're now facing in real time.
