They'll drag Angel here but
It begs the question:
In 2004 we considered games from 1992 "Retro"
Thats was a 12 year difference, same as ME3 is now. What changed?

Mass Effect 3 is being added to my retro year list.

Most Xbox 360/PS3 games play just like games do not. They just don't look as good.
The leaps between gens from 1992 to 2004 is MASSIVE in terms of just about everything so the retro label feels suitable.
So while PS3 era games are technically "Retro". They sure as hell don't feel like it.
I think labeling was games retro due their age is kinda redundant at this point or at least we need to extend the mark where games and consoles can be considered retro.
I was 20 years old in 2008. I was 10 in 1998.
In 2008 when me and everyone I knew was playing WoW: Wrath of the Lich King, Halo 3 and COD4... the idea of playing Ocarina of Time was 100% "retro". That was only a decade.
Games longevity now has skewed this. Skyrim is 13.
Imo when they’res current gen, last gen, then retro. It’s just how it is.
Feels weird, especially since he 360 gen just keeps having games remade from it so they feel less retro
By the time i was old enougu to game at 5-6 it was 1994-1995 and the PS1 was already out lol
An N64 is retro because that’s just not how we play games anymore. It’s something from a bygone era. An Xbox 360 is a weaker PS5.
Play Mass Effect, Skyrim, or GTAV and tell me that’s what gaming today is like.
I can’t even name 3-4 games that use that formula.
The hunt for the realism set weird expectations in people when they talk about retro games.
There I said it.
NES -> PS1/N64/Dreamcast = Retro
PS2 -> Wii U = Vintage.
PS4 goes Vintage when PS6 comes out, PS2 goes Retro and so on.
You tell them something about a game older than 5 years and they're like "Damn homie. You're older than dirt. That shit ain't litty. You're old. It's retro."
But seriously everyone struggles when their childhood stuff gets the retro label
I think you do you but it’s better to categorize things with more nuance now.
Vintage is at least 20
So in an era of 3D video games, looking back to 2D gaming has this extra qualification other than age.
What criteria beyond age are given for ps3 being “retro” - we need to evaluate that criteria against the definition.
Modern games have capitalized on polish and technical stuff rather than something like the jump from 2D to 3D. Its a less obvious difference.
I've accepted that games in 2000s now are retro now lmao. 20 years ago high school/early college me loved them lol
