I would donate monthly so long as it's not funneled through ActBlue or other entity directly or indirectly related to the Democratic Party. This should be a narrowly defined effort to protect the free press and people subjected to the Trump's administration going after its perceived enemies.
I think Liz Cheney has enough money to defend herself, but she needs and deserves more people than her family and fellow Jan6 committee members to stand by her side publicly starting now.
After witnessing and experiencing class action suit grifters (lawyers: 10M, everyone else .07 cents each) I would be more inclined to donate to the ACLU. Maybe they could be brought into this loop?
I don’t think they’re suited for this particular role at all, though I think they are incredibly important for the work that they already do. And that work will get even more important in the next four years.
As much as I want to see trump fail in his revenge tour, it probably be less stressful for the people involved to get a Biden pardon. Unless they want the fight, of course.
I think some of them, like Liz Cheney, have immunity already since it was done in the scope of her position in congress. Others may too, but I'm no expert.
Btw, such a fund should not be associated with any one particular lawyer or group of lawyers, it should give grants to targets of MAGA and their counsel, though obviously it could also help connect those targets with excellent counsel
The message that needs to be sent is: if you are a journalist or media outlet doing your job and holding the administration to account, or a public official who stands up for the rule of law and against corruption, or a whistleblower exposing corruption, we have your back
With the help of Marc Elias and Democracy Docket. If you don’t follow and support them, look them up. He has been fighting in court for voting rights and more!! Support them!!
It's what Republicans do. They keep ppl in constant litigation to run out their funds and give the impression something illegal is going on. They did this to the Clintons and the Bidens.
Another point about the advantages of turning to non-US news sources: it reminds you that there is a world outside the USA where, you know, things are happening too.
This is what I'm starting to wonder. Where is the outrage? And where are the big bucks? We NEED outrage and platforms and money and people who know what they're doing. Where ARE they? The Democratic Party is offering no leadership whatsoever, imo. Thanks, tpm, for doing what you do, by the way.
Yes! And Trump knows he has the 400 Billion Man behind him. That can fund a lot of intimidation. Call your fund the FUCK YOU TRUMP fund just for good measure.
I 100% agree and have had similar thoughts about the necessity of creating a "risk pool" for potential Trump targets, so that anyone who takes him on can be "insured". I'd gladly contribute to this pool, because it's basically the most efficient way of beating back Trump's attacks. Count me in!
This is surely being considered among the 1A focused defense attorneys in this country. There are many who wish to be Ted Olsen, David Boies or Dan Goldman. The question is who wrangles and leads
I'm ready to donate consistently, your idea is actually a critical need. Defend Against Fascism. a non-profit for administering/managing donations, a coalition of skilled litigators to defend against the onslaught. For example: @marcelias.bsky.social @markzaidesq.bsky.social @mcuban.bsky.social
Trump absolutely will go after people just out of revenge and spite, and yes, we absolutely need something like this to help those people defend themselves.
Cathie Wood from Ark investments sees Tesla going to $2,000, in the next four years, now at $400+. Elon's investments in crypto and his Tesla stock running up in the market (went up another 90% after the election) as he claims to be the new Republican bank will help fund those legal battles.
I was thinking about this, too. Fighting individually is costly, inefficient, and ineffective. Make an umbrella organization, fund the lawsuits, archive and share results. The power is in numbers.
Might be a challenge as a sitting president can’t be sued for acts within the periphery of presidential duties, and SCOTUS likely will interpret that differently than would a rational person. Still probably worth putting them on the hotseat rather than obeying in advance…
If not the Prez, then others around him and those carrying out his stuff...keep them busy, although the taxpayers will pay for the defense most likely...gotta be a way.
Steamrolling over people using bogus lawsuits has been Trump's m.o. his whole life. A legal fund to defend people from this is not only a good idea, it is essential to maintain any sort of freedom from Trump's bullying rule.
Start with the people who were actually targetted in the past 9 years---by the left---https://judiciary.house.gov/media/press-releases/final-report-weaponization-federal-government
I think the sad thing is that rich Republican are crazy and willing to put up $ for defending their kind (i.e. clerks who didn't certify gay marriage) but Democrat donors are like "no that's too far I want to be rich".
What you’re describing was the ACLU as it worked during the Red Scare. A public campaign to persuade average people it’s worth fighting for freedom, with deep pockets, good messaging & great lawyers. The challenge is today we have issue orgs that each have a legal defense project w expert lawyers.
3 trillion Pentagon fake war bullshit

Great work Josh! Why not a national day of action were regular, upset citizens can do a large scale protest? We need a visible, large pushback. Not cowering in the corners. But people can’t organize it themselves. We’ll need someone with a big horn and chops to Shepard it through

Otherwise the harassment potential of frivolous lawsuits will be enough to deter many press outlets, politicians, and others from crossing Trump
I'm ready to donate NOW.
